Calcined Lime is a product in the form of calcium oxide (CaO) obtained by heat treatment of limestone (calcium carbonate - CaCO3) at high temperatures in the range of 1000-1200°C. In this process, carbon dioxide (CO2) is removed from the limestone and the remaining CaO becomes an important raw material with high purity and reactivity in industrial applications.
Physical and Chemical Properties Calcined lime is white to light grey in colour and contains calcium oxide of very high purity. When this product is heated at high temperatures, the carbon dioxide in the chemical structure of limestone is separated and CaO, a highly reactive compound, remains. When calcined lime comes into contact with water, it is rapidly converted into calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and this process is an exothermic reaction, i.e. a reaction that releases heat.
